واصف سمات يقسّم الصورة إلى خلايا صغيرة ويحسب في كل خلية توزيع اتجاهات التدرُّج (الحواف)، ثم يُسوّي هذه التوزيعات ضمن كُتل متداخلة ليُنتج متجه سمات كثيفاً يصف الشكل الظِلِّي للجسم بمتانة أمام تغيّرات الإضاءة.
